The Evolution of Rae Wright Artistry

January 3, 2017

Often times, when I'm at a painting pARTy or vendor event, I'm asked, "so how did you get started doing this?"
Well, it's kind of a long story.

I was born and raised in the GTA.

Coming from a very large family (4 brothers and 4 sisters!) I needed something to do that was just mine. I started drawing and painting as a young child. It was a fun and challenging hobby. Throughout high school I took one art class every year to learn new skills.

I had to stop pursuing my art for a few years due to some medical reasons and I missed it dearly. When I was better, I remember painting a monochromatic bald eagle for my surgeon. As far as I know, he still has it. Fortunately, I was hooked again. I went out and purchased another sketchbook and some pencils and got back to it. Unfortunately, with the time I missed, I was a little rusty.
It started in Peterborough, ON. I got a book of photography as a gift one year for my birthday. Absolutely fascinated, I purchased my DSLR and went off on my search of things to photograph. My company actually started out as "Rae Wright Photography." I did a lot of nature shots and some family photography. My favourite part of that was getting that perfect smile on their children's faces when someone did something silly.
I started drawing and painting the things and the people I was photographing.

Eventually, people started giving me photos asking me to draw or paint the subject.
My business evolved to "Rae Wright Artistry."

My husband and I moved to the Ottawa Region. I didn't photograph as much. I spent a great deal of my time painting, drawing, and doing belly casting.

One day, about a year and a half ago, I was approached by a woman in the small town in which I lived. She asked if I'd consider teaching her.

In regards to my previous teaching abilities: when I was in high school, I taught art and writing to children 10 and under at a local community centre. I loved it. I missed it. As an adult, and being an Early Childhood Educator, I have taught infants 6 week old all the way to 10 year olds. I also spent two years working at a Young Moms school where I also taught teens about parenting.)
I was excited about teaching art to adults. I had a good role model in my high school art teacher and a bit of education experience under my belt. I accepted the challenge.
My first private lesson was so exciting! She asked if I would consider teaching painting at a group level. Challenge accepted!
I shopped around and found the best places to buy my materials. I started doing my painting pARTies in home.
A few months after I began, I was approached by the owner of a restaurant in Rockland. She wanted to know if I'd consider doing my events there. YES!
I started off teaching adults. Then youth events. Then parent & child events and finally the introduction of my Little Artist events!
My love of art and of teaching came together quite beautifully with the support of the people who came to my events.
In 2016 I relocated again - this time to Guelph, ON.
In some ways I feel like I'm starting all over again. In other ways, I know that it'll be okay because of the experience and people I've met along the way.

Thank you everyone. I couldn't be following my passion without you.
Paint on, my friends.
